​Oryx International School is pleased to welcome their new Executive Principal, Mr Derek Laidlaw

Qatar Airways and Orbital Education are delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Derek Laidlaw, as Executive Principal at Oryx International School for the 2018/19 Academic Year. Mr Laidlaw will head up the new world-class campus which will offer state-of-the-art facilities, for students from Foundation Stage 1 through to Year 13, in Mesaimeer, Doha. 

David Pottinger, CEO of Orbital Education which operates Oryx International on behalf of Qatar Airways, said: “Mr Laidlaw clearly demonstrated how his leadership experience made him the ideal candidate to lead the school forward into the future. We look forward to him being in post and to seeing him develop a five-star educational institution in Doha for the children of Qatar Airways staff. We are delighted to welcome him on board”.

The appointment of Mr Laidlaw followed a global search and will take up his post on 1 August 2018. Mr Laidlaw, joins us from the position of Head Teacher at King’s College, The British School of Alicante which he has led over seven years to become the leading international school in Spain, achieving an Excellent grading in all categories from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) of the UK.  Mr Laidlaw is no stranger to Qatar, having held a senior leadership position at Doha College for six years.  Mr Laidlaw firmly believes that we have a responsibility to ensure that our young people receive the best upbringing and education possible and that they are equipped to become future leaders.  When asked about his new appointment, Mr Laidlaw said: “I am delighted to be joining Oryx International School at such an exciting time.  I am looking forward to engaging with students in learning discussions, helping them to find their ´eureka´ moments to enable them to prepare themselves for the challenges ahead.”

We are also delighted to confirm that Mr. Jarlath Madine has accepted the position of Head of Primary at Oryx International School for the 2018/19 Academic Year.  Mr. Madine has over 30 years’ experience as an educator, is passionate about education and believes that every child has a right to a first-class education. He has, in the past year, laid down strong foundations for Oryx and established excellent relations with all stakeholders in the school.  His ongoing leadership of the Primary section of Oryx International School will be a major asset, bringing continuity and experience with his calm, confident, and confidence-inspiring presence.  He added that; “For our school to continue to be successful, we need a strong relationship between children, parents and the school. We all play an important role in developing our children, I am excited to start working with Mr. Laidlaw and look forward to the continued development the school in our new premises in September 2018 .”

STEM: Our facilities for the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, will include six quality equipped science laboratories for physics, biology and chemistry, as well as food technology, resistant materials and robotics classrooms.

SPORT: To keep our students active, we will offer outdoor basketball, netball and tennis courts, athletics track and a soccer field; while our indoor facilities will include a six-court sports hall, fully equipped training gym, swimming pool and a teaching pool. 

ARTS: The performing arts facilities will include music, dance and drama rooms; audio visual and music recording studios.  Fine arts and design classrooms will be equipped to inspire our budding artists. The 500-seat auditorium will host numerous events from school productions to music recitals. 

LEISURE: The two-floor canteen will cater for our students’ appetites with healthy meals and drinks, while they relax during breaktime. There will be exciting outdoor exploratory areas in each key stage block to ensure time from the class is spent relaxed yet still within a learning environment.
