This day offered an exciting opportunity to unite the subsidiary groups
Oryx International School celebrated Earth Day with a very special event this year in collaboration with various Qatar Airways subsidiary groups, including QR Cargo, QAS Cargo, Technical Waste at HIA, and QACC.
This was a fantastic opportunity to learn how these companies are promoting sustainability efforts and fostering a true circular economy within the Qatar Airways Group, for which Oryx Intenational School is proud to pertain.
An Interactive Day to Learn and Act with Esteemed Guests
The day took place in one of our new air-conditioned marquees, providing a comfortable space for all attendees. Our students enjoyed a wide variety of interactive booths and educational activities throughout the day, where they got an up-close look at Qatar Airways' sustainability projects. They also took part in activities with prizes, making the experience even more fun and enriching.
We were pleased to welcome Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo, and Fathi Atti, Senior Vice President Aeropolitical and Corporate Affairs, who shared inspiring messages with our Student Eco-Warriors and School Senior Leadership Team at the start of the event.
Our Executive Principal Mr Derek Laidlaw commented, "We were absolutely honoured this year to welcome our colleagues from the wider Qatar Airways Group to celebrate the 2025 Earth Day to such a prestigious level. Being the Qatar Airways school, truly affords our students access to the most unique experiences, all of which enrich their learning in a hands-on and practical manner, which is the hallmark of a true British education. As Benjamin Franklin famously once said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."
Our Eco School Commitment
As a recognised Eco-School, we are deeply committed to the continuous improvement of our own eco-friendly practices, and this event allowed us to gain valuable insights directly from sustainability experts. Did you know, for example, that food waste from flights becomes fish food? A great example of how small changes can have a big impact!
In parallel, our students were offered an incredible opportunity to feature in the "voices of tomorrow" podcast, which is currently featuring in Qatar Airways locations here in Doha, including the operational warehouse entrance. We are sure that long after Earth Day itself, these beautiful messages will continue to inspire Qatar Airways staff about the important messages on sustainability from today's youth.
Earth Day 2025 certainly offered an exciting opportunity to unite the subsidiary groups with a shared commitment to environmental improvement, and there was no better way to achieve this than by involving future generations: our students.
Thanks to Those Who Made This Possible
The event was exceptionally organised by our Assistant Principal Ashleigh Dobinson, along with Mr. Hashem our Head of Operations and Mr. Cadacio our Facilities Manager. We are deeply grateful to all colleagues from the wider Qatar Airways group and subsidiaries for their unwavering support of students, school and more widely the reciprocated commitment to sustainability.
We look forward to continuing to work together for a greener and more responsible future!
