Although Qatar National Sports Day was rather wet this year, many events were still held across Doha. This is an annual event held on the second Tuesday in February of each year, the main objective is to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst its population. The first National Sports Day was held in 2012.

Everyone in the country is encouraged to participate in sporting activities with colleagues, friends and family. Various companies are involved in hosting sporting events at the stadiums and parks in the country, with countless free sporting sessions and competitions.

The day is viewed as an opportunity to bring communities closer together through sport, based on sporting principles of team building, inclusion and unity, participation, fitness and health.

National Sports Day also focuses on Qatari culture with traditional Al Shawahef rowing championships being held, acting as a reminder of Qatar’s ancient sporting heritage and the role it has played in the country’s most recent developments.

Oryx International School held its annual Sports Day on 13 February to show its support of Qatar National Sports Day. The students competed in various field events, such as shotput, javelin (plastic ones), long jump, high jump and short track races. They showed lots of spirit and enjoyed the day immensely.

Have a look how much fun our students had on our sports day on Facebook and YouTube. To celebrate further, Qatar Airways held a sports day event at Al Saad Sports Club from 08:00 to 16:00. All Qatar Airways employees were invited to attend where they enjoyed a number of sports and fun activities for the whole family.
