Parent EAL classes are complimentary for all Oryx parents, they are offered weekly during the Winter & Spring terms and predominantly aim to improve English vocabulary and communication skills in a verbal and written context.
Today is a day of celebration and community spirit at Oryx International School! We are thrilled to kick off our annual, complimentary EAL (English as an Additional Language) classes for Oryx parents.
Since the classes were launched in 2019, this programme has served as a bridge to enhance practical English skills and strengthen the bonds within our dynamic multicultural community.
As an international school, with a student body coming from over 90 nationalities, Oryx is a melting pot of cultural richness. However, this does some problems for our families who are not necessarily native English speakers, in regard to supporting their child through the rigorous demands of the British educational model and school communication. Or this reason, we launched our EAL classes, to provide a bridge between the school and our parent community, to extend support to those who need it, and help strengthen our parents’ English skills, so they can not only support their child’s learning, but also feel more comfortable in day-to-day interactions here in Qatar, given that English is the common language in most social scenarios.
Since the classes inception, the demand has been increasing, and this year we were pleased to be able to count on the support of more academic staff members, in order to extend the classes to offer both a Beginner’s and Intermediate level. Some of our longer-serving parents have been attending since the classes started in 2019, and it’s a pleasure to see their confidence and practical skills in English flourish in this time, so by extending the classes to continue to cater to their evolving needs, has been a real opportunity for both the school and the wider Oryx community.
Mrs Belinda Misquith, one of our esteemed teachers and EAL programme coordinator, is beaming with joy as the classes begin. She shared her vision with us: “Every journey begins with a single step. Today, we take that step together, building our future through English and growing in confidence with every word we speak.”
