Our Silver squad underwent rigorous training in essential expedition skills, including mapping, navigation, food preparation, pack planning, and tent pitching.
On Wednesday, 5th February, 22 of our students embarked on an unforgettable adventure as they set off for their Duke of Edinburgh Silver expedition in Muscat, Oman. This six-day journey tested their resilience, teamwork, and navigation skills, as they ventured into the mountainous region of Jebel Akhdar.
Jebel Akhdar, known as the "Green Mountain," is part of the Al Hajar mountain range and is famed for its breathtaking terraced farms, lush orchards, and cooler climate—a striking contrast to Qatar’s flat and arid landscape. Unlike the familiar terrain of their Bronze Award, our students faced a greater challenge navigating rugged landscapes, completing two nights and three days of wild camping.
Before setting out, our Silver squad underwent rigorous training in essential expedition skills, including mapping, navigation, food preparation, pack planning, and tent pitching. As they trekked through the mountainous terrain, they were constantly challenged physically and mentally. However, the awe-inspiring views and sense of accomplishment kept their spirits high. Some of the most memorable moments included chasing sunrises, conquering peaks, exploring hidden villages, cooking meals under the stars, and taking well-earned pauses to soak in the magnificent landscape.
The Value of the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Expedition
Participating in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh's Award provides our students with invaluable life lessons, including:
- Skill Development: Students acquire essential skills such as navigation, first aid, and teamwork.
- Physical Fitness: The expedition promotes health and well-being through endurance and physical activity.
- Personal Growth: By overcoming challenges, students develop resilience, confidence, and problem-solving abilities.
- Holistic Development: The program fosters a sense of responsibility, community engagement, and environmental awareness.
This expedition not only contributed to the students' personal and academic growth but also helped shape their character, demonstrating their commitment, leadership, and ability to work effectively in diverse environments.
It was truly inspiring to witness our students rise to the challenge and push beyond their limits, proving their determination and adventurous spirit. Well done to all participants for their incredible achievements!
