The clean-up not only reinforced the importance of environmental stewardship but also allowed students to take pride in their role as active global citizens.
At Oryx International School, fostering global citizenship and environmental awareness is at the heart of our educational philosophy. This commitment was brought to life when Year 6 students had the privilege of attending an enlightening presentation by Jose from the Doha Environmental Action Project (DEAP). His visit not only deepened the students' understanding of environmental challenges but also inspired meaningful action within our school community.
Jose’s presentation shed light on the escalating issue of pollution and its detrimental effects on natural habitats across Qatar and beyond. By illustrating the direct consequences of littering on wildlife and ecosystems, he emphasized the importance of individual and collective responsibility in preserving the environment. His message resonated deeply with the students, sparking thoughtful discussions on how they could contribute to sustainability efforts in their daily lives.
However, the learning didn’t stop in the classroom. As part of this initiative, Jose coordinated a clean-up trip to the Singing Sand Dunes, giving students the opportunity to apply their newfound knowledge in a practical and impactful way. Armed with gloves and rubbish bags, Year 6 pupils enthusiastically set out to make a difference.
Upon arrival, students were confronted with the harsh reality of environmental neglect—plastic bottles, discarded ropes, and old fishing nets littered the landscape. Working collaboratively, they tackled the clean-up with determination and resilience, removing large quantities of waste from the area. This hands-on experience was both eye-opening and empowering, as students witnessed firsthand the impact of human activity on the natural world.
The clean-up not only reinforced the importance of environmental stewardship but also allowed students to take pride in their role as active global citizens. Their efforts contributed to the preservation of one of Qatar’s natural landmarks and served as a powerful reminder of the positive change that can be achieved through community action.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to Jose and DEAP for their invaluable contribution to our students' learning journey. This initiative has left a lasting impression on Year 6, igniting a passion for environmental care that will undoubtedly influence their actions both inside and outside of school.
A huge congratulations to all our Year 6 students for their hard work, enthusiasm, and commitment to making a tangible difference in our world.
