Getting Started at Oryx

To help ensure you are fully prepared before starting your journey at Oryx International School, we have put together the following New Parent Checklist. Use this as a handy reference in the weeks leading up to your child's first day to make sure everything is in place, giving you one less thing to think about as you begin your Oryx journey.

First day of school – What your child needs to bring

To help your child settle in with confidence, we've provided guidance below on what they should bring and prepare for their first day of school. Please refer to the relevant section for Reception, Primary or Secondary to ensure you're fully prepared for a smooth start.

Preparing Your Child for Reception (FS2)

Starting school is an exciting milestone, and there are plenty of simple ways you can help your child feel confident and ready for their first day.

Before they start, you may wish to:

  • Talk positively about starting school and what to expect.
  • Explore photos of our Early Years environment on our website or social media together.
  • Encourage your child to try on their school uniform.
  • Let them help choose their lunchbox and water bottle.
  • Read books about starting school to help build excitement and familiarity.

What to Bring on the First Day

Please ensure your child brings:

  • School uniform – worn in line with our Uniform Guidelines. 
  • Appropriate footwear – school shoes or PE trainers, depending on their timetable.
  • Outdoor essentials – school hat, cardigan or fleece, and PE kit (as required).
  • Sun protection – sunscreen applied before school and a labelled sun hat.
  • A labelled change of clothes – kept at school for emergencies.
  • Healthy snacks and lunch – including two healthy snacks, lunch, and a refillable water bottle containing water only.
  • School bag – for books, communication and other school items.

Lunch ideas and options 

Suitable snacks include:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Cheese
  • Sandwiches
  • Plain yoghurt
  • Cereal bars
  • Savoury crackers or crispbreads
  • Small pieces of cooked meat

Please Do Not Bring

For the safety and wellbeing of all children, please do not send:

  • Nuts or products containing nuts.
  • Sweets, chocolates or sugary drinks.
  • Drinks in glass bottles or cans.
  • Toys.
  • Jewellery or small items that may present a safety risk.
  • Party bags, birthday treats or gifts, as these are not distributed in school.
Preparing Your Child for Primary (Year 1 to Year 6)

We are delighted to welcome you and your child to our wonderful Primary School community. To help your child enjoy a confident and successful start, we've put together the following information.

All learning resources, including exercise books and writing equipment, are provided by the school.

What to Bring Each Day

Please ensure your child has:

  • School uniform – worn in accordance with our Uniform Guidelines. 
  • Appropriate footwear – school shoes or PE trainers, depending on their timetable.
  • Sun protection – sunscreen applied before school and a labelled sun hat.
  • Healthy snacks and lunch – including two meals for break time and lunch time.
  • A labelled refillable water bottle – containing water only.

Lunch ideas and options 

Suitable snacks include:

  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Sandwiches
  • Cheese
  • Cereal bars
  • Savoury crackers or biscuits
  • Small pieces of cooked meat
  • Plain cake (small portion)
  • Plain yoghurt (best kept cool)
  • Water

Please Do Not Bring

To help keep all children safe and healthy, please do not send:

  • Nuts or products containing nuts.
  • Sweets, chocolates or sugary drinks.
  • Drinks in glass bottles or cans.
  • Toys.
  • Jewellery or small items that may present a safety risk.
  • Party bags, birthday treats or gifts, as these are not distributed in school
Preparing Your Child for Secondary School (Year 7 to Year 13)

We are delighted to welcome your child to our Secondary School community. This is an exciting stage in their educational journey, and we look forward to supporting them as they develop academically, discover their interests, and achieve their full potential.

The school provides planners, exercise books, and subject textbooks or e-books. Students will receive these from their teachers during their lessons.

What to Bring Each Day

Students should bring:

  • School uniform – worn in accordance with our Uniform Guidelines. 
  • Appropriate footwear – school shoes or PE trainers, depending on their timetable.
  • Laptop – in line with our Bring Your Own Device policy requirements, including up-to-date antivirus software.
  • A labelled refillable water bottle – containing water only.
  • A pencil case containing:
  • Pens (black or blue ink)
  • Pencils
  • Eraser
  • Ruler 
    (Correcting fluid is not permitted.)
  • Padlock and key – for their allocated locker (optional but recommended).

Additional Equipment

Students will need subject-specific equipment, such as calculators, protractors, compasses and their PE kit. These items are not required on the first day, as students will receive their timetable and further guidance from their teachers.

Students in Years 7–9 who borrow school textbooks are expected to keep them in good condition. Damaged textbooks may incur a replacement charge.

Lunch ideas and options 

Students bringing their own lunch should pack healthy options such as:

  • Sandwiches
  • Fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Cheese
  • Cereal bars
  • Savoury crackers or biscuits
  • Small pieces of cooked meat
  • Plain yoghurt
  • Water

Please Do Not Bring

To help maintain a safe and healthy environment, please do not send:

  • Nuts or foods containing nuts (including products such as Nutella).
  • Sweets, chocolate or sugary treats.
  • Sugary or energy drinks.
  • Food requiring reheating or refrigeration (except for Years 12 and 13, who have access to a dedicated lunch area).
  • Drinks in glass bottles or cans.

Parent ID Lanyard

All parents and guardians must have a Parent ID Pass for security requirements.

To request a Parent lanyard, please complete the online Parent Lanyard Request Form

You will be required to provide a Headshot Photograph of yourself and any other guardian(s) applying for the card in JPEG format.

Your card will be prepared by the School Reception Team and once ready you will receive an email to collect these from the Main School Reception between 7:00am -3:00pm.

Please note, as part of our safeguarding practices, parent lanyards must be worn at all times when parents enter the school campus. Qatar Airways lanyards are not an acceptable form of identification on campus.
