To help ensure that you and your child's first day at the Oryx International School is as exciting as possible, we've collated this checklist. This means you can focus on getting that 'first-day photograph', rather than worrying about whether or not you've packed the right footwear.

Click on the appropriate school age below, and you get a list of everything you need to bring. We've also included some general recommendations to make your child's first day run as smoothly as possible.

Early Years Essentials

What to bring on the first day of Early Years
Foundation Stage

It is important that both you and your child are excited about starting your journey with our fantastic Early Years team.

You can begin preparations by talking to your little one about the transition and showing them pictures of their new environment from our website. You can also enlist their help in preparations by encouraging them to try on their uniform and choose what they would like in their lunchbox. Sharing books about starting school is also a great way to prepare your child.

Things to bring to school on your child's first day

  • Uniform - please make sure your child comes in their uniform as outlined on the Uniform page.
  • Suitable outdoor clothing - school hats, cardigan, fleece, PE uniform - depending on the weather and time of year.
  • Suitable footwear - either their school shoes or trainers depending on whether they have PE on that day, your teacher will provide you with the timetable on their first day of school.
  • Sunscreen and sun hats – please carefully apply sunscreen to your child in the morning before drop-off. Please also provide a sun hat every day, or you might choose to leave one in school.
  • A clothes bag - containing a spare change of clothes. Clothes will remain at school unless used. In this case, your teacher will inform you to re-stock the bag.
  • A snack and lunch - containing two small and healthy snacks (breaktime and lunchtime). You can learn more about our recommended snacks below.
  • A water bottle - labelled with your child's name. The bottle should contain fresh water (no sweet juices), they can top these up at school, we do not provide plastic or paper cups.
  • Blanket - for comfort and nap time.
  • School bag - for taking home any books, home-school communication, booklets, or weekly journals. Book bags can be purchased from our Uniform page.

Suggested food for snacks:

  • Sandwiches
  • Cubes of cheese
  • Diced Fruit/Veg - apples, carrots etc.
  • Cereal bars
  • Savoury biscuits/Crispbreads
  • Small pieces of meat
  • Small tubs of yogurt
  • Water

Please do NOT send the following:

  • Sweets or chocolates.
  • Drinks in cans or glass bottles for safety reasons.
  • No NUTS in case of allergies of other children.
  • Jewellery or small objects for safety reasons.

Please do NOT bring NUTS because of allergies of other students.

Whilst we appreciate it is lovely to celebrate birthdays, we do not distribute party bags, gifts, or food so please do not send these to school.

Primary Essentials

What to bring on the first day of Primary School

We hope you and your child are excited about joining our wonderful Primary school community. A world of learning and laughter awaits.

In order for your child to have the best possible first day, there are a few things you can prepare. We provide all learning resources including exercise books, and writing equipment.

Your child will need a number of items at school each day as follows - please have these ready for the first day:

  • Uniform - please make sure your child comes in their uniform as outlined on the Uniform page.
  • Suitable footwear - either their school shoes or trainers depending on whether they have PE on that day, your teacher will provide you with the timetable on their first day of school.
  • Sunscreen and sun hats – please carefully apply sunscreen to your child in the morning before drop-off. Please also provide a sun hat every day, or you might choose to leave one in school.
  • A snack and lunch - containing two small and healthy snacks one for break time and one for lunchtime. We are a nut-free school.
  • A water bottle - labelled with your child's name. The bottle should contain fresh water (no sweet juices), they can top these up at school, we do not provide plastic or paper cups.

Secondary Essentials

What to bring on the first day of Secondary School

We are delighted that your child will be joining our outstanding Secondary school for this crucial time in their educational journey. Our internationally acclaimed education will set them on the best possible path, enabling them to explore their passions and fulfill their potential. We look forward to welcoming them.

We provide a school planner, subject / electronic textbooks, as well as exercise books for all students. These will be given to students by their teacher in their first lesson in each class. However, there are several items that students will need to bring with them on their first day and beyond.

Students will need a number of items,  please have these ready for the first day:

  • Uniform - please make sure your child comes in their uniform as outlined on the Uniform page, this includes the school issue school bag and black shoes.
  • Laptop - please refer to our Bring your own Device page for recommended specifications. Parents must ensure that their children's laptops have anti-virus software installed, i.e. Kaspersky.  Please
  • A water bottle - a labelled water bottle, containing fresh water which can be filled up at school.
  • Pencil case - including but not limited to:
    • pencil
    • pen - Black or blue ink writing pens
    • eraser
    • ruler
    • Please note: correcting fluid is not allowed in school
  • Locker and Key - every student is allocated a locker, and they should ensure they have their own padlock and key if they would like to use this during the school year.

Other, not for the first day of school:

  • Subject-specific equipment – students will require specific equipment for their lessons for example a calculator, protractor and compass for mathematics; as well as their PE Kit. However, they will not be expected to have all this on their first day as individual timetables will be issued on the student’s first day in school. Students will also receive login details and passwords to access online resources. Their specific subject teachers will provide them with further details on these requirements.

Students in Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 and 9):

  • Students who borrow relevant textbooks from the school are to ensure that these books remain in good repair throughout the year. Should a teacher deem the book too damaged, parents will be charged the value of the book.  Certain subjects will utilise e-books.

If students should bring their own lunch to school, we suggest the following:

Parent ID Lanyard

All parents and guardians must have a Parent ID Pass for security requirements.

To request a Parent lanyard, Please email photo-id@oryxschool.qa with your full names and provide a Headshot Photograph of yourself and any other guardian(s) applying for the card in JPEG format.

Once your card/s are ready, you will receive an email to collect these from the Security Office at the main entrance at Gate 2 between 7:00am -3:00pm.

Please note, as part of our safeguarding practices, parent lanyards must be worn at all times when parents enter the school campus.
